Walnut and oak boards, cut and finished by hand. Pieces turned on a lathe and lacquered until they hold the light. Made in India.
Sixty-four squares, each one cut from a single board so the grain runs true across the whole playing field.
Every piece is turned, weighted with lead, felted underneath, then finished in gloss black or ivory.
The dark squares and the frame. Close-grained, deep chocolate, and it darkens further with the years and the light in your room.
The light squares. Quarter-sawn so the ray fleck catches across the board, and hard enough to take a lifetime of pieces set down firmly.
A single line of brass laid between the playing field and the frame. It is the only ornament on the board, and it is enough.
The classical silhouette every player already knows, with the fussier turnings taken out. Weighted, felted, and lacquered in gloss black or ivory. A king that sits properly in the hand and refuses to tip.
Thirty-four pieces to a set — two spare queens, because promotions happen.
